BIO

Brian Barneclo (b. 1972 Indianapolis, IN) -studied painting and art history at Indiana University. In 1996 he moved to San Francisco and found work as a sign painter. At this time he was developing his own body of work and began showing it mostly in group shows. As he continued to paint signs on outdoor walls while painting on ever larger canvases in the studio the two disciplines eventually merged in the form of murals.

INFLUENCES
Being born in the 70's, and being American, his childhood was influenced by Looney Tunes, Star Wars, skateboarding, punk rock and rap music. As he studied art history he became influenced by artists like Pablo Picasso, Romare Bearden, Paul Cezanne, and Stuart Davis. He gets tons of inspiration from living in San Francisco.

ABOUT HIS ART
Barneclo's work often takes on the subject of cityscape because he feels it's the best way to express a lot of things all at once. The influence of sign painting manifests itself in one stroke references to letter shapes and architectural forms. He likes to paint this way because it's quick, efficient and direct. The concept of Gestalt comes through again and again in the process of his work. Cutting back and forth with vignettes that integrate and make up larger compositions- the totality of which are simple.
